weekly freelancing job update 2

by vienna on January 19, 2011

As a freelance writer at Odesk who’s living in a country where a dollar doesn’t go far, I just find it hard to compete with freelancers from the Philippines, Bangladesh, and India who do not have any problem bidding 1$ for an hour of work. Oftentimes, buyers even declare that they want or they prefer FIlipinos to apply to their job offers. I know Filipinos are really good and hardworking but I think the buyers really meant Filipinos who are in the Philippines.

I know this fact because once I applied to such job and I reiterate in my cover letter that I am a Filipino. I also only bid 3$/hr. I want to know for sure if my cover letter will be noticed if my bid is the same as that of most bidders from the aforementioned countries. Because you see, all the rejections I’ve been getting are not doing any good to my self-esteem. I started to doubt if the writing samples in my cover letter are really good enough or not. So I said to myself, I will bid the same price to see if the buyer will choose me over the others. If I don’t get the job, it means I am simply not good enough and I need to work on my skills. If i get it, it means that buyers just want a cheaper labor.

After a few minutes of sending my application, I immediately got a message from the buyer and this is what it says;

To make the story short, I got the job. I am still on trial period but I am glad that I got the chance. I wont earn a lot from this job but it’s okay because I sort of proven something to myself. And this is also my first Virtual Assistant job so it’s okay if I just earn that much because this will be just like getting an experience before I dive head on to becoming a virtual assistant.

In other news, I didn’t finish all the tasks I got from from my editing job last week because I just got them last Thursday and I was not able to work during the weekend. As a result, I earned much less than the previous week of freelancing. :(
