work at home: is it worth it?

by vienna on January 21, 2011

It’s already Friday and I am still so far away from earning more than the amount I earned last week—and that’s not even a lot.

It’s been really slow. I have two running jobs at Odesk but tasks are hard to come by and it somehow agitates me (I’m blaming on it the hormones) that I can’t earn as much as I can (and want). See, I am sort of desperate to earn at least half of what I earn from my day job because this will help me give a good reason for my decision to quit my day job and work at home.  At the moment it looks like it is far from happening and this is what’s making me irritated. (Oh my, I’m so glad I have this blog to rant about my irritations, desperation, wishes, and everything else).

And because I try to cheer myself up a bit, I looked at other positive things that lead me to the decision to work at home as a freelance web content provider. First is the very obvious one and I keep telling it to myself—I get to stay home, work on my own pace, on my own time, and I get to be the boss. I can rest when I want and I can do other things in the background—like running the laundry or waiting for the bread to bake (yes I do bake a bread sometimes). I have a complete freedom and I get to decide what to do with my day.

Second, I also keep telling myself that there was a time I was really earning enough from it and I am trying to be positive about it happening again. And so to stay positive about it, I checked my accounts in all the websites that have earn-from-home schemes and this is what I’ve got.

Here’s to summarized them and I added some more  (without screenshots—too lazy to take screenshots of all of them):

TLA: 2,477.81$
IPL: 3,611.89$ (total of my two accounts there, one of which is not in use anymore)
PPP: 70.30$ (the new PPP)
Backlinks: 714.50$ (not using it anymore because their given rate is too low)
Backlinks Affiliate: 50.00$
Loudlaunch: 404.00$ (haven’t got a task since mid of 2008)
Smorty: 283.20$ (haven’t got a task since mid of 2008)
BlogToProfit: 25.00$ (haven’t got a task since mid of 2008)
Blogvertise: 12.00$ (haven’t got a task since mid of 2008)
ReviewMe: 55.00$ (haven’t got a task since mid of 2008)
SponsoredReviews: 469.90$ (haven’t won a bid since mid of 2008)
LinklyLoveArmy: 7.00$ (haven’t got a task since mid of 2008)
BloggingAds: 82.00$ (haven’t got a task since mid of 2008)
Blogitive: 10.00$ (too few tasks)
Direct Link Sales: 525.0$ (advertisers who contacted me directly thru my blogs)

There are more sites I am a member of but I can’t remember all of them now. And if you notice a lot of these sites sort of died of since the economy crisis in 2007/2008. That’s also around the time I stopped and got myself a day job.

So I started earning from my blogs around the third quarter of 2007—say October 2007. Let me start counting the months from October 2007 to December 2010 (39 months including the months I stopped) and the rough grand total (I say rough because I can’t remember all the sites I earned money from already and I am not confident of my calculation-hehehe) is: 8,797.60$

Not bad. It’s a small amount coming every month but looking at the grand total now, I say it feels good to earn this amount form a hobby–something I enjoy doing during my spare time, beside my real job, when I am bored, etc. :)   Of course, it also entailed some hard work so with all the work that came with it, I think I truly deserve this.—>
